The City of Jalandhar

By Jennie Kakkad

Jalandhar is one of the major cities of the state of Punjab in India. It is well-connected with rail, air, and land transport. It is a labor-intensive industrial city having a gamut of factories producing many essential products apart from sports goods. It has many rubber manufacturing units that produce footwear, belts, and tires.
Jalandhar has many auto parts units that supply their product to major automobile manufacturers. Being located on a fertile land between Beas and Sutlej rivers, the city is also a huge market for agricultural products. Apart from this, textiles and surgical instruments units are equally well-established in the city.
It is also known for its two major fairs, Hariballabh Sangeet Mela and the Fair of Baba Sodal. It is a platform for classical singers and musicians from different parts of the country who gather to showcase their talent. Moreover, in 1956, a Sangeet Academy under the grace of Hariballabh was formed to promote teaching and research in classical music.
The Fair of Baba Sodal is held once a year in the month of September to commemorate the death anniversary of a small boy named Sodal, who was known as the baby-God. Punjabi language is the mother tongue of the place.
